Fall Picture Books to Transition Into Winter
1. Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter
This is such a beautifully illustrated seasonal story, in which a brother and sister take a walk through their town, saying goodbye to autumn and welcoming the first signs of winter. Along the way, they notice the changing trees, migrating birds, cooler air, and other little clues that a new season is arriving. It's a great introduction to seasonal changes that you can work into your science unit, and it reminds us to slow down and appreciate the world around us.
2. The Sweater
Full of whimsical woodland creatures, this heartwarming story holds a lesson for us adults as well as the children. When Holly the racoon meets a sad little bird, she rallies the woodland friends to help the bird prepare for winter. As everyone struggles with their own loneliness in the dark of winter, the birds song rings out as a thank you to its community, warming the hearts of everyone who hears it.
3. Over and Under the Snow
What happens beneath the snow when the winter world above seems quiet and still? This story follows a father and daughter on a cross-country ski adventure as they discover the secret world of animals living under the snow. From squirrels and mice to frogs and other woodland creatures, this beautifully written book introduces children to the hidden ecosystems and winter survival strategies of forest animals. It's a fun addition to a winter science unit!
4. Fletcher and the Falling Leaves
Fletcher the fox notices that his favorite tree is losing its leaves, and he's worried something terrible is happening! Determined to help, he tries everything he can think of to save his beloved tree. But as the seasons change, Fletcher discovers that sometimes what looks like an ending is actually part of something beautiful.
5. The Leaf Thief
Squirrel is convinced someone is stealing the leaves from his tree! As more and more leaves disappear, he sets out to find the culprit. With the help of his friend Bird, Squirrel learns a little about why trees lose their leaves in autumn. Full of humor and playful illustrations, this is a fun way to introduce young readers to the changing seasons and the science behind falling leaves.
6. Leaves
A curious young bear experiences his first autumn and becomes concerned when the leaves begin falling from the trees. Unsure of what is happening, he tries to put them back! As the days grow colder, Bear eventually settles in for a long winter's nap. This is a gentle, sweetly illustrated story, and it's a wonderful introduction to autumn, hibernation, and the natural rhythms of the seasons.
7. Winter Is Coming
This one is my all-time favorite. Through the eyes of a young girl observing the woods, readers get a glimpse of the many changes taking place as winter approaches. She watches the animals prepare for the colder months, notices the changing landscape, and quietly takes in the beauty of the natural world. It has truly lyrical language and gorgeous illustrations, and this story encourages children to become careful observers of nature and appreciate the quieter beauty of the approaching winter season. I've read it with my girls every year now for the past three years, and it still gives me goosebumps!
Welcoming Winter, One Story at a Time
The transition from fall to winter can be hard for many of us. The longer nights, the gloomier weather, the longer hours spent indoors. But we can reframe this by seeing it as an opportunity to help children (and ourselves) slow down, notice the little things, and develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
I choose these books every year because they offer a little bit of everything: seasonal science, woodland animals, changing leaves, cozy stories, and the magic of the first signs of winter.
Gather a few blankets, make something warm to drink, and enjoy a little seasonal reading together!
