Fall is the perfect season for kids to get creative. Everywhere you look, there are leaves, pinecones, acorns, and pumpkins just waiting to be turned into something beautiful. But let’s be real. As much as we love a good paint project, the cleanup afterward can be… a lot.
That’s why this season, we’re keeping the creativity high and the mess low with a few of our favorite fall nature decor crafts. All made easier (and cleaner!) with low-mess supplies like acrylic paint markers and tempera paint sticks.
These art tools are colorful, quick-drying, and perfect for home and classrooms because they skip the usual paint chaos: no water cups, no brushes to rinse, and no puddles of tipped-over paint!

Quick Notes About Low-Mess Painting Alternatives
If you haven’t tried these before, get ready to fall in love. Here are a few things to note about our favorite tools for low-mess arts and crafts:
Acrylic paint markers go on smooth, dry fast, and work beautifully on rocks, wood, and even leaves. My favorite dual-tip paint markers are perfect for adding little details like eyes, outlines, or patterns. Plus, they make classroom art centers so much simpler: no setup, no cleanup, and no waiting around for things to dry before students can take their work home. They're water-based, but they can stain clothing and other porous surfaces, so it’s important to cover surfaces and use smocks if keeping clothes stain-free is a concern! I typically use these with my upper-elementary kids.
Tempera paint sticks are the mess-free answer for younger kids! They glide on like crayons, show up bold and bright, and dry in under a minute. We especially love them for quick art projects. Just pass them out and start creating!
We've been using this set for the past year, and my kiddos love the wide range of colors!
Fall Nature Crafts
Leaf Animals
Take a walk and collect a handful of leaves in different shapes and sizes. Once they’re dry, use paint markers to turn them into animals! Oval leaves make great owls, maple leaves become foxes, and long skinny leaves can turn into fish or bugs.
In the classroom, this one’s perfect for a quick art station after recess or a nature walk. Since there’s no liquid paint involved, you can set it up right at students’ desks.
At home, string the leaves together and make a festive fall garland to go across the mantle or over a window!

Painted Pumpkins (No Carving Required!)
Skip the knives and grab the paint markers! Kids can draw faces, patterns, or even turn their pumpkins into characters. Acrylic paint markers are great for older kids who want to add lots of details, and tempera paint sticks dry quickly and give pumpkins a smooth, matte look that won’t chip like regular paint.
This is one of my favorite fall art projects because you can do it inside, with no messy paint trays or water spills. Each student just needs a pumpkin, a few paint sticks or markers, and a paper placemat!
Garden Rocks
Collect smooth rocks and turn them into fall decor for your garden or classroom windowsill. Paint leaves, acorns, or little woodland creatures using acrylic paint markers, then seal them with a clear matte spray. They also make great “kindness rocks” to leave around your school grounds too!
Since paint markers don’t require drying racks or cleanup, this one’s easy to squeeze into a short art block or when the kids need something hands-on to do at home.

Pinecone Creatures
Add some personality to pinecones! Paint faces or patterns right on the pinecone scales with paint markers. You can even glue on felt ears, paper tails, or googly eyes for extra fun.Teachers love this one for small group time: minimal supplies and virtually no cleanup make it a classroom win.
Wood Slice Ornaments
If you have a few small wood slices (you can find them online or at most craft stores), they make adorable rustic ornaments. Draw pumpkins, leaves, or fall quotes using paint markers, then attach a bit of twine or ribbon. These look so sweet hanging from a branch display, bulletin board, or even for kids to give as gifts!
